CHAPTER 10: GARETH

When I get back to the cabin in the late afternoon carrying a brace of hares, I find Allegra standing outside. She’s a few yards from the cabin, her back to me, looking wistfully off into the distance.

“Allegra,” I call to her as I approach. “What are you doing? You should be inside where it’s warm.”

She turns to me with a big grin.

“Gareth!” she says.

Actually, I have to admit, she is bundled up pretty well. My fur hat that she’s got on her head is a bit loose, and comes down almost to her eyes. Her whole upper body is draped in one of the big, fur-lined bed coverings, and her feet are clad in her own boots, which have dried by the fire. Her legs are bare, though, and I catch an alluring glimpse of her lovely calves.

“What are you looking at?” I ask as I approach.

“I was waiting for you,” she says. “I didn’t know which way you had gone. I thought I heard you off that way.”

“The sound is funny out here. It echoes around the valleys and the trees. Sometimes it sounds like the noise is coming from one direction when really it’s coming from another.”

She just smiles and tilts her head.

“You look…cute,” I say.

See, now why did I have to go and open my big mouth. Why can’t I just keep my dumb opinions to myself? That kind of talk is only going to lead to more trouble.

“Come on,” I tell her, holding up the rabbits. “Let’s get inside. I’ve got us some dinner.”

Inside, I kick off my boots and hang my cloak on the door. I can feel Allegra eyeing my bare torso.

“I hope you don’t mind,” Allegra says, “But my body-glove was still wet, so I borrowed some of your furs.”

“No problem,” I tell her as I drop my boots by the fire. “Can’t have you running around naked.”

“Why not?” she teases.

My body goes tense. Why does she have to tease me like this? She’s seen how I get. She knows that she’s playing with fire.

I have my back turned to her, and I hear the sound of her makeshift fur cloak dropping to the floor.

“Gareth.”

I turn around and my jaw drops damn near to my chest. When she said that she borrowed some of my spare furs, I didn’t think she meant this. She has a few wrapped around her hips like a short, scrappy skirt that leaves her luscious thighs fully exposed. On top, she has wrapped some other furs into a kind of makeshift bra that is straining to contain her large breasts.

“Allegra, you look…”

I gulp, unable to finish my sentence. She finishes it for me.

“Cute?”

She cocks her hip like a fashion model and throws me an adorable little wink.

“Come on,” she says with a grin. “I’m starving. I’ll help you get dinner ready.”

“Allegra, are you sure? We’ll have to gut and skin them first. It’s a bit gory.”

“Yeah, yeah,” she says in a mock tough-guy voice, “I’ve seen worse, I’m sure.
